Ingredients
2 lbs hamburger
8 slices cheddar cheese
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp sea salt
1 tbsp black pepper
2 large yellow onions
2 tbsp bourbon (optional—it’s not a make or break like some people will tell you it is)
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
8 Hamburger buns
Directions
Step 1
Season your hamburger patty’s on both sides with garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper.
Step 2
Slice onions in half and then into 1/4 inch slices. Add to a pan on medium heat with a little olive oil.
Step 3
Cook onions until softened, then add in your bourbon, if using. Ignite and let the alcohol burn off. This step is completely optional.
Step 4
Once onions are softened, add in your balsamic vinegar and stir to combine. Let it cook for another 10 minutes until the onions have turned caramel in color and are completely softened. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Step 5
Begin cooking your hamburgers. Cook to desired doneness, then lightly chop, top with caramelized onions, then cheese. Let cook for another minute or two until cheese is softened. Remove and set aside. Cook the remaining patty’s.
Step 6
Butter and toast buns if desired.
Step 7
Assemble your burgers. I use two patty’s so I can avoid having to eat an extra 200 calories in buns, because two patty’s on a hamburger is always enough to fill me up.
